Temporary Skilled Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

A Temporary Skilled Shortage Visa (Subclass 482) allows employers to deal with labor shortages by pulling in skilled employees, where employers can’t get an applicably skilled Australian worker. Categories of this Visa

Short-Term Skilled Occupation List: It’svalid for two years. You can positively extend it for another two years, it will be evaluated every six months, and you can’t get a PR.

Medium-Term Skilled Occupations List:

  • It is valid for four years.
  • You can renew it as long as the occupation is on the list.
  • You can also get a chance for PR after three years.

Cost of the Visa

Here’s the list of the various costs related to the Visa.

  • It costs AUD 2960 for every applicant above 18 years.
  • The cost is 675 AUD for applicants under 18.

You must pay additional costs for English tests, health checkups, police certificates, biometrics, etc.

Extend your stay

If your Visa expires and you desire to extend your stay for working longer, the following are the criteria.

  • Your employer must present a new nomination.
  • You must reapply for another Visa.

Please note that Hong Kong Visa holders can apply for PR after their extension of 5 years is complete.

Including family

You can add your family members to the application. It depends on whether you presently have a Subclass 457 Visa.

You don’t have a Subclass 457 Visa: If you don’t have a Subclass 457 Visa, you can include members of your family unit.

You have a Subclass 457 Visa: If you presently have a Subclass 457 Visa and are applying for another one, the family members you can add are:

  • One member of the family unit, or
  • A person having the TSS Visa and is a member of the family unit and is:
  • Your spouse or de facto partner.
  • Your spouse or partner’s children who are unmarried or not in any relationship and are.
  • Under 23.
  • Over 23 but rely on you or your spouse because of disability.
  • Is a dependent child of your spouse’s step-child or kid.

To be granted the Visa, family members must be added to your nomination, or the one you sponsored you shows evidence that he agreed to support your family members. Plus, your family members must meet health and character requirements.

Also, note that you can’t include family members after the application is submitted. However, it is possible through another application in between the processing of your application. Your family members can also join you later with another application.

From where to apply: You can be in or out of Australia when applying, but not in immigration clearance. If you are applying from Australia, ensure that you have a Substantive Visa or a Bridging Visa A, Bridging Visa B, or Bridging Visa C.  

Processing duration: Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and processing times may fluctuate based on the following.

  • You have lodged a complete application with all the necessary information and documents.
  • Your response time to additional info queries.
  • The time it takes to check supporting data.
  • The time it takes to receive further information from externals.

Conditions: You and your family members must obey all Australian protocols and meet Visa applications. You must start your job within 90 days.  

  • Reaching Australia (applied from outside) or Visa grant date (in Australia already).

Visa label: Your Visa will be digitally connected to your passport. If granted, you will get a notification containing a grant number, which allows you to check the Visa details. 

Work: You can Work in Australia only in the sector you were nominated for and only for the employer who sponsored you. Plus, your family members can also stay, study, and work in Australia.

Here are the eligibility criteria for this Visa application.

  • There is no age limit.
  • You must at least have two years of experience in your nominated field.
  • Your Visa application shouldn’t be canceled previously or currently.
  • You have no debt with the Australian Gov.
  • You must sign an Australian Values Statement.
  • You must have a primary proficiency in the English language as per the standards unless exempted.
